TC 3-20.31-256 describes the M256 120-millimeter (mm) cannon through descriptions of components and functions, principles of operations, serviceability and inspection, and weapon record data.
The target audience includes commanders, trainers, M1-A1, M1-A2 SEP V2/V3 Abrams crewmembers, personnel selected to attend Abrams Master Gunner School and Abrams Master Gunners of maneuver units. This publication applies to all M256 cannon systems in an Armored brigade combat team, and Infantry battalions and Cavalry squadrons not assigned to a brigade combat team. Units are assigned to organizations.

The information in TC 3-20.31-256 is an accumulative development of knowledge, designed to improve Master Gunners, leaders, and crews understanding of the M256, to a level of mastery that enables units to achieve a higher level of lethality.
