This ST (Student Text) ST 3-09.30.31 was prepared and used at the U.S. Army Field Artillery School. It is chocked full of US Army Fire Support subjects.
FIRE SUPPORT is the rapid & continuous integration of surface to surface indirect fires, target acquisition, armed aircraft, & other lethal & nonlethal attack/delivery systems converged against targets across all domains in support of the maneuver commander’s concept of operations. — land, sea, air, space & cyberspace.
THE ROLE OF THE FIELD ARTILLERY
The role of the FA is to suppress, neutralize, or destroy the enemy by cannon, rocket, & missile fire & to integrate & synchronize all FS assets into operations.
PURPOSE & SCOPE:
The spirit of the Field Artillery is that dedication to speed & accuracy that drives Field Artillerymen to seek every means to bring immediate effective fire on the enemy when it is requested. The information that follows presents many precise & detailed actions that the COMPANY FIST must take WHEN TIME PERMITS. There are many situations in which a few rounds “right now” would have decisive effect, while many rounds minutes hence may not. The good leader knows how & when to get effective rounds out in the shortest possible time, & he prepares himself & the firing battery now, for that eventuality. He trains himself & the firing battery to be responsive, flexible, accurate, & decisive in any tactical situation.
