ATP 3-09.23 sets forth the doctrine pertaining to the organization, equipment, command and control, operations, and techniques for the field artillery battalion in support of a maneuver or supported commander. It establishes the responsibilities and general duties of key personnel by focusing on techniques of how the unit fights. This document incorporates procedures outlined for all field artillery battalions.
The principal audience for ATP 3-09.23 is all members of the artillery community. This includes field artillery Soldiers and leaders.
This publication describes the field artillery battalion to include:
- Doctrinal guidance for commanders, staffs, and subordinate personnel that are responsible for planning, preparing, executing, and assessing field artillery operations.
- Operations for the field artillery battalions assigned, attached, or under the operational control of the corps, division, brigade combat team, division artillery, field artillery brigade, or multidomain task force. The techniques described herein are flexible guidelines.
Introduction

Chapter 8 identifies the unique considerations and characteristics of the different types of field artillery battalions.
Appendix A discusses development, format, and content of a formal field artillery battalion operation order and field artillery support plan.
Appendix B provides an overview of liaison duties.
Appendix C discusses the requirement for distributed units.
