Purpose. The purpose of this manual is to provide information on the law of war to DoD personnel responsible for implementing the law of war and executing military operations. This manual represents the legal views of the Department of Defense.
A comprehensive compilation, the 2023 DOD LAW OF WAR MANUAL is the authority related to the law of armed conflict presented by the DoD. It is a resource for DoD personnel—including commanders, legal practitioners, and other military and civilian personnel. Despite any perceived flaws and limitations, this book offers a consolidated collection of commentary on a vast array of topics involving the law of war. The tone attracts a great deal of criticism, but that is to be expected—it is, after all, a big target.
This manual reflects many years of labor and expertise, on the part of civilian and military lawyers from every Military Service. It reflects the experience of this Department in applying the law of war in actual military operations, and it will help us remember the hard learned lessons from the past. Understanding our duties imposed by the law of war and our rights under it is essential to our service in the nation’s defense.
This book is a “Mini” (half the size of a piece of paper).
A popular size to carry anywhere (briefcase, large pocket, purse) but the print is large enough for easy reading. The binding is with coil, allowing easy flipping of pages without jamming.
The color covers are laminated for weather protection with black and white inside printing.
(A BIG size version (8 1/2 inch by 11 inch, the same size as a regular sheet of paper) is on this website too)
