Training Circular (TC) 3-20.33 describes how to plan, prepare, execute and assess a successful gunnery training for all mortar platforms.
The target audience includes commanders, trainers, and master gunners of maneuver units. This publication applies to all indirect fire weapon systems in an Infantry Brigade Combat Team (IBCT), Stryker Brigade Combat Team (SBCT), and Armored Brigade Combat Team (ABCT).
This TC provides the training framework to assist mortar sections and platoons to train, qualify, and certify to a common standard. This framework (the training strategy) provides all prerequisite and required events to build evaluate, and execute the critical tasks, culminating in qualification. The strategy provides the required ammunition resources, training area, firing point, and impact area requirements to ensure units properly generate proficiency mortar squads, sections, and platoons that provide effective high angle indirect fire support to maneuver units.
The purpose of TC 3-20.33 is to ensure all mortar units have a common framework of training through qualification that—
- Provides a systematic way to develop the mortar training
- Includes mortar gunner and fire direction center (FDC) evaluation
- Includes a common application of critical training tasks during the training
- Defines the culminating level of proficiency that mortar squads, sections, and platoons must achieve in order to provide indirect fire support during maneuver unit live fire
- Develop training plans that incorporate the various prerequisites for section and platoon training development in tactical scenarios in order to support maneuver collective
- Culminates with the mortar live fire external evaluation qualification (Table VI).
