ATP 3-18.1 defines the current U.S. Army Special Forces (SF) concept of understanding, planning, and executing unconventional warfare (UW) operations.
ATP 3-18.1 describes UW fundamentals, activities, and considerations involved in the planning and execution of UW throughout the full range of military operations. It explains techniques used by units and headquarters (HQ) at the SF battalion level and below to conduct UW.
This ATP is designed to be UNCLASSIFIED in order to ensure the widest distribution possible to the appropriate Army special operations forces (ARSOF) and other interested Department of Defense (DOD) and United States Government (USG) agencies.
This ATP is specifically for SF Soldiers; however, it is also intended for use Army wide to improve the integration of SF into the plans and operations of other special operations forces (SOF) and conventional forces. Commanders and trainers should use this and other related publications in conjunction with command guidance and the Combined Arms Training Strategy to plan and conduct successful UW operations.
ATP 3-18.1 applies to the Active Army, the Army National Guard/Army National Guard of the United States, and United States Army Reserve unless otherwise stated.
ATP 3-18.1 is the Army’s doctrinal foundation for UW execution at the SF battalion level and below. This publication also serves as the Army’s description of how SF below the SF Group (Airborne)-level and assigned and supporting units conduct UW to larger joint and interagency audiences. ATP 3-18.1, therefore, provides doctrine directly useful to all users within the U.S. Army.
ATP 3-18.1 identifies principles of resistance and principles of UW and clearly establishes the relationship of SF to supporting resistance through UW. ATP 3-18.1 is fundamental to the SF Soldier’s understanding of resistance movements and how to support them.
